Student Organization Work

May 2006 - May 2008 Leader (a.k.a. "Stern but Groovy Taskmaster") - LIS Web Team
September 2005 - May 2006 Member - LIS Web Team
Library and Information Science Program, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii

The LIS Web Team is a volunteer group of students who take responsibility for updating the LIS website (www.hawaii.edu/lis) as well as for providing instructional services to the LIS community. Their main responsibility each semester is to put on the HTML Workshops, a series of sessions designed to teach the basics of HTML programming and CSS styling. The target participants are students from the LIS Program, but starting in 2007 the Web Team extended their services to faculty and staff at the UH Libraries, as well as Honolulu community practitioners in order to help create oppportunities for professional development in the library community.

As Leader of the Web Team, I coordinated the efforts of the members of the Web Team; updated the LIS website; designed and taught instructional sessions; and helped to plan other individual projects. The main projects I accomplished were a revision and update of the HTML Workshop curriculum in 2007 and a move to include community practitioners in addition to students as our workshop attendees. I also spearheaded a successful redesign of the LIS website in 2007 as well.
April 2005 - May 2008 Founder and Head Librarian - LIS Lending Library
Library and Information Science Program, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii

When I joined the program in the spring of 2005 I noticed that despite the fact that the same textbooks were required for classes semester after semester, there was no mechanism for providing textbooks for students or for sharing books among students. I decided that I could start a program to meet this need, and invented the LIS Lending Library, stocked entirely with books donated from graduating LIS students. By August 2005 we had a total of 49 books covering 13 courses, and we continue to collect new textbooks every semester. In Fall 2006 the Lending Library was incorporated into Hui Dui, so that future students can continue to manage this free textbook-sharing program.
January 2007 - May 2007 President - Hui Dui
January 2006 - December 2006 Vice President - Hui Dui
Library and Information Science Program, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii

Hui Dui is the group which represents the student body of the LIS Program. Hui Dui members serve as a student voice in faculty meetings, as well as put on two crucial events: the New Student Orientation at the beginning of each semester, and the celebratory Graduate Dinner at the end. Hui Dui also works to provide a little bit of comfort to the LIS students in the form of snacks and printing services in the Bilger 319 classroom. We raise all of our money through fundraisers each semester.

As a member of Hui Dui, I was involved in creating and planning the Online Auction fundraiser - which successfully raised $750 (spring 06), $851 (fall 06), and $1127 (spring 07) while I was involved. I also worked to plan the two student events each semester: the New Student Orientation and the Graduation Dinner. As President, I worked to coordinate the efforts of this hard-working group to continue to provide excellent service to our fellow students.
March 2006 - October 2007 Webmaster - American Library Association Student Chapter
University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii

I participated in this retreat, and subsequent follow-up meetings throughout the year, offering an opinion from a student's perspective, in addition to working as an assistant in typing and editing the document during real-time discussions and subsequent cleanup/editing.
2007 - 2008 University of Hawaii System - WebVoyage Committee
